Checklist of best practices

Oikos St.Gallen and START Hack have compiled a checklist of the most important aspects of organizing a climate-friendly event.
More background information and recommendations on these topics can be found in the guide linked above.

We have put together our top 4 quick wins for more sustainable event management:

  1. Location
Choose a venue that is easily accessible by public transportation.
Make sure your venue is barrier-free.

  2. Program
Invite primarily regionally based speakers and consider hybrid formats to include contributions from international speakers.
Ensure gender balance in your program.

  3. Catering
Delicious vegetarian and seasonal food from the region reduces the ecological footprint significantly!
Ask for reusable bottles at the catering to avoid PET.
When ordering catering, allow for a 20% no-show rate of participants to avoid food waste.
Actively ask your caterer for Fairtrade and organic products. This also strengthens the demand for these products.

  4. Waste & Recycling
Save paper and inform participants digitally.
Use reusable tableware and avoid all disposable materials (flyers, decorations, plastic cutlery, etc.).
Offer waste separation at the venue.

  5. Emissions
Identify your emission sources using appropriate online tools.
Collaborate with a trusted offset partner to initiate a voluntary offset payment or one that is built into the ticket price.
